An aspiration for many thoroughbred enthusiasts may be to go and watch the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, but how many Australians get that opportunity? In truth not many, but that’s just what Robbie, Jody and daughter Shelby Gray are doing right now- YES the trip of a lifetime!

The incentives in this trip of a lifetime are far greater for Robbie and Jody though, because they have more than a viewer’s interest in watching the $1,000,000 Longines Kentucky Oaks 139 at Churchill Downs Friday May 3rd (USA time). They are there to watch BEHOLDER the Champion daughter of their sire HENNY HUGHES run in this prestigious race.

Although BEHOLDER’s decorated résumé includes victories in the 2012 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Gr. I) and this year’s Las Virgenes (Gr. I) and Santa Anita Oaks (Gr. I), she’s one of a very tough line-up in this year’s Oaks. Her connections are confident, however, she will hold her own May 3.

In her final workout on Tuesday, the racy bay daughter of HENNY HUGHES had more than a few interested parties on hand to see her strut her stuff, including her Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, her owner and the man behind Kentucky’s historic Spendthrift Farm, B. Wayne Hughes, and Spendthrift’s farm manager, Ned Toffey.

And she didn’t disappoint them. Wearing her usual black ear muff training hood and handled by jockey-turned-exercise rider David Nuesch, the $1.5-million earner skipped over the big track in strong fashion, covering a mile and one-half before she was done.

Mandella is also looking for his first win in the Oaks and is hopeful BEHOLDER will deliver.

“I would prefer (the Oaks field) to be easier so I could stick my chest out and brag a lot, but I feel that way anyway with my filly,” he said. “I’m sure Todd Pletcher and those other guys love their fillies, too, but I wouldn’t trade her for anything.”

When asked why BEHOLDER was so special, Mandella noted, “She’s extremely talented for one. And she’s a very healthy, strong filly and able to take it all in. That’s the main concoction.”

Ned Toffey added, “One trait that stood out when she was a young horse, however, was her beautiful appearance”.

“She’s a really, really good-looking filly,” said Toffey, adding that her name came from the saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” (There at last we have it officially!)

Whatever the result, Robbie and Jody will be hugely excited and proud and privileged to see in the flesh a Champion filly (officially Eclipse Award USA Champion 2 year old filly 2012) by their own sire HENNY HUGHES.

As with many Oaks meetings, sponsor Longines require the day to be fashion splendour in PINK- wonder what Jody will wear?

To really top off this amazing short USA holiday, Robbie and Jody will also get to visit their stallion HENNY HUGHES, who has shuttled back to USA to stand at the famed Walmac Farm in Kentucky for the 2013 season. It’s still pretty cold over there, and it will be a very proud couple of Aussies’ looking at their own horse at stud in USA.

Having only owned him for one WA season, I’m sure they are keen to see how he is handling life back in the USA and before he heads “downunder” again. I know I can’t wait to see him safe and sound back at Bullsbrook. Gee —that is a long way from Kentucky isn’t it?

PS. The Oaks is run at 5.42AM Saturday 4th May Perth time (WST) or 7.42AM (EST).
The Derby is 6.24AM Sunday 5th May Perth time (WST) or 8.24AM (EST).

HENNY HUGHES filly BEHOLDER basically trounced her rivals winning the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) on the weekend. BEHOLDER jumped from the outside barrier and led all the way-again! They just don’t get near her, and now she is headed to the biggest 3 yr old fillies race on the calendar- the Kentucky Oaks in Louisville on Friday 3rd May.

BEHOLDER earned 100 points for the win and now has 164 points, the top qualifier for the most prestigious race for three-year-old fillies in the U.S. Owner Hughes loved the way his filly ran. He said he wouldn’t mind running her against the boys in the Kentucky Derby, but this year’s points system, based on separate races for colts and fillies, prohibits that.

Trainer Richard Mandella said “You expect it from a horse like her, but with horse racing you don’t want to expect too much,” Mandella said. “It’ll break your heart. She just did everything right, handled herself well. She’s a very good filly.”

It was BEHOLDER’S fifth win from eight starts. She also has two seconds. “She’s got the heart of a warrior,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to the Kentucky Oaks,” Hughes said. “We can’t go to the Derby. They don’t let us in anymore.”

Jockey Garrett Gomez moved Beholder to the lead from barrier 6 and the daughter of HENNY HUGHES never looked back.

“She left the gate like a shot,” Gomez said. “She gives me 110 percent when we go out there, and she’s just a pleasure to be on all the time. The mile and an eighth (in the May 3 Kentucky Oaks) will be another question. We’ll see what happens.”

HENNY HUGHES is still in Kentucky at Walmac Farm having shuttled there for Rangeview owners Robbie and Jody and in Australia he is in the top 6 among Australia’s second-season sires with 18 domestic winners this season.

Cant wait to have him back either!

He must know he is home as he has thrived since returning to WA and his familiar stables.

He trialled last week and very easily accounted for Power Princess and others with the fastest time of the day winning in 59.61 held, and by 1.25 lengths. It’s great to have him back.

BEHOLDER ridden by her usual jockey Garrett Gomez jumped straight to the lead and sprinted clear in the straight to score by more than three lengths, and without the others getting in her sights.

BEHOLDER had polled an overwhelming 225 votes in the Eclipse Awards after her Group 1 triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and she has now franked that title after a throat ulcer was found to have been the cause of her first up defeat in this 3 yr old campaign.

“When you’ve got one this good it’s just a relief to get the job done,” trainer Richard Mandella remarked. “She’s very fast and to take her back and fight her wouldn’t make any sense. She’s a great filly. We will run her next in the G1 Santa Anita Oaks on April 6.”

The Group 1 adds to the tremendous winning run for Henny Hughes who is currently serving a 100 plus Kentucky book at Walmac Farm on a reverse shuttle arrangement with owner’s Rangeview.

He brought up a stakes winning double in the USA on Saturday after King Henny ran down Triple Crown nominee Titletown Five to claim the LR Gazebo Stakes (1200m) at Oaklawn Park.

Champion trainer Steve Asmussen prepares King Henny for his father Keith. It was his third stakes win after black-type priors in the LR Clever Trevor Stakes and LR Big Drama Stakes.

In Hong Kong, Henny Hughes gelding Great Charm was a very impressive winner last time out at Sha Tin and trainer Richard Gibson is already looking ahead to the G1 Hong Kong Classic Mile.

In Macau, his consistent gelding The Star Of Geely claimed the LR Lisboa Prelude (1100m) for trainer Gary Moore. It improved his record to 4 wins and 4 placings in 8 starts at Taipa.

In South Korea, Henny Hughes filly Indian Blue is just as reliable with 3 wins and 3 placings in 6 starts. Her latest win was a runaway 8 length victory in the LR Se-Gye Ilbo (1400m).

And in Singapore, Henny Hughes colt Winner’s Smile couldn’t have been more impressive winning on debut over 1200m on Friday night. “He’s always shown us plenty of ability but is still very green and doesn’t know what racing is all about as yet,” trainer Sam Chua said.

“We had hoped to race Winner’s Smile on the turf but had to delay those plans as there is no turf racing until the end of the March,” Chua added. “He didn’t like the kickback from the Polytrack in his trials so we decided to keep him wide.

“He will make a nice turf horse and we are certainly happy to get a win out of him first-up.”

Back in Australia, Vision scored a remarkable win on debut at Kembla Grange last weeks. The gutsy and tough filly led them up on a Heavy 10 and was headed clearly on the corner, only to dig really deep and come back and win by a nose.

Henny Hughes is now comfortably sitting in the Top 10 of the Australian second-season winners’ premiership with 14 winners headed by his promising filly Medusa’s Miss (photos left).

2 year old filly BEHOLDER by HENNY HUGHES has just been crowned the 2 year old CHAMPION FILLY for 2012, winning the ECLIPSE AWARD the most prestigious title for a 2 year old filly in USA Thoroughbred racing. Winners of the ECLIPSE AWARDS are selected by voters from Daily Racing Form, the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. BEHOLDER won overwhelmingly, in winning 225 votes from a possible 254.

This AWARD comes on the back of BEHOLDER’s brilliant win in the BREEDERS CUP $2 million Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies Race at Santa Anita November 2012 – the toughest race a 2 year old filly could be entered for.

It was a gutsy decision on the morning of the Breeders Cup meeting for trainer Richard Mandella; either remain in the easier $500,000 sprint race, or put everything on the line in the $2 million Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies over 1700m, remembering that BEHOLDER’s previous wins & places (inclu black type), had been sprints over 1000-1200m.

Richard Mandella had the courage to convince owner B. Wayne Hughes to go the Grey Goose!

BEHOLDER ran hard every step of the way in the Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies under Garrett Gomez, the only jockey she has known. She went her first quarter in 22.62 seconds, which was faster than the best older mares went their first quarter in the Breeders Cup Ladies’ Classic later the same day. BEHOLDER then ran the 800m in 46.47s and was hugely courageous to hold off all challenges to win by 1 length- in fact they actually never got near her.

BEHOLDER, will step out shortly to begin her 3 year old campaign and she goes some way to prove what HENNY HUGHES’ DARLEY trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said about him;

“As a stallion, everybody thinks his offspring will be quick and early and win at four furlongs, whereas I think just the opposite. I think they’re going to come around a little later and run a little further.”
He knew the horse well.

So trainer McLaughlin’s knowledge and foresight has proven correct—HENNY HUGHES’ best will indeed be more than one-dimensional speedballs. We can’t wait for his WA foals.

HENNY HUGHES sired 1 more stakes winner than Harlan Holiday to take the title.

The two stallions then fought out the leading 2 year old Sires list with Harlan Holiday finishing first with 26 winners from 62 runners and 5 stakes winners and HENNY HUGHES having 22 winners from 52 runners but the remarkable 6 Stakes Winners.

As a racehorse, HENNY HUGHES himself had proven formidable up to 1400m: a near-champion at two, twice an Eclipse Award finalist, and a multiple Grade 1 winner, a racehorse so fast and so talented, his first trainer Biancone once dared compare him to Secretariat.

Though no Secretariat as such, HENNY HUGHES was still exceptional, winning six of ten starts—usually after unleashing a soul-crushing sprint down the straight. His victories included five stakes and back-to-back Group 1 races, and he defeated older horses with great aclaim in the Vosburgh of 2006.

“He was special … one of the best I ever trained,” recalled Kiaran McLaughlin, who trained HENNY HUGHES after Darley acquired him following his 15-length rocket launch win in the Tremont Stakes, his second career start.

With no sprint worlds left to conquer, $1.1 million-earner Henny Hughes entered stud in 2007 at Darley’s Kentucky division, it was from Darley that Rangeview’s Robbie and Jody acquired HENNY HUGHES.

With all that background, it’s then no wonder that the phone did ring in Bullsbrook after Champion Filly BEHOLDER won the Breeders Cup Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies race, for those stud owners in USA in November, knew just how well HENNY HUGHES 2 year crop was performing, and BEHOLDER’s win was the icing on the cake. They wanted him back in USA.

It was a big decision to contemplate, having only just purchased the horse and only having him here in WA on the property for a few months, but in the end Robbie and Jody have leased HENNY HUGHES to stand the coming USA season at prestigious Walmac Farm in Kentucky. HENNY HUGHES arrived safe and sound at Walmac early in the new year.

While HENNY HUGHES may be used to this shuttling business, Robbie and Jody are not, so everyone hopes that he gets a great book of mares in USA and arrives back in WA bright and happy ready for our next stud season, and when his first WA bred foals will be born!

Robbie and Jody have just done something most Australian stallion owners can only aspire to- their own newly resident stallion HENNY HUGHES (USA) is so in demand after a remarkable season in the US, that he is now to shuttle back to America, but as a Rangeview owned stallion.

Rangeview Stud has just signed the deal that will see Henny Hughes stand at historic Walmac Farm in Lexington Kentucky for the 2013 northern breeding season.

We all wondered what would happen when outstanding 2 year old filly BEHOLDER won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies on 2nd November. The most prestigious race meeting on the calendar and the most prestigious 2 year old fillies race, and the winner was sired by HENNY HUGHES.

Well it didn’t take long for the phone calls from across the world, and Robbie and Jody had to think about whether their newly purchased stallion who had settled so well, was going to leave our shores again. Something that had not really ever been on the agenda. But we all know that horse racing does some remarkable turnabouts, some good some bad, and this one is just amazing.

It’s all about opportunity and timing and HENNY HUGHES deserves his next chance on the world stage. Originally owned and shuttled by Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley operation before his outright sale to Rangeview this year, HENNY HUGHES’s star has risen enormously in the past few months.

Walmac Farm’s John T L Jones III is quoted as saying:
“What a brilliant year Henny Hughes has had,” “He’s arguably the top sire of precocious two year-old performers in North America today. “He’s the leading sire of two year-old stakes winners and getting such a freak of a filly in Beholder who impressed us all with her two-turn victory in the Breeders’ Cup.”

In addition to BEHOLDER, HENNY HUGHES is represented by 2012 juvenile stakes winners Star Contender, winner of Canada’s important Cup and Saucer Stakes, and last week’s Japanese Listed winner Keiai Leone.

There are 22 winners among his latest Kentucky bred crop of juveniles and they have earned $2.23 million. He is running second to Harlan’s Holiday (24 winners – $2.77 million) in both categories on sires lists. However, there are still a couple of big races coming up before the end to the northern hemisphere season, and HENNY HUGHES could finish on top of the two year old Sires List in USA! How amazing for a WA owned horse. At worst he will finish second. Not bad?

Overall, HENNY HUGHES has sired 32 stakes horses and the earners of more than $10.13 million. There are also 11 winners to date among his first crop in Australia.

Robbie has said that several studs were very interested in getting HENNY HUGHES back to USA, but Walmac were extra keen and they put a deal on the table and were very easy to deal with.

WALMAC International covers about 900 acres in Lexington, was owned and managed by John T.L. Jones, who began in the quarter horse business in the 1950s, from 1970 – 1977, after which it was sold to John Jones, Jr., and Bobby Trussell. Walmac stood the great stallion Nureyev, sire of over twenty champions and a sire of sires; Miswaki, the sire of 97 stakes winners and an important broodmare sire; the wonderful stayer Alleged, twice winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe; the brave Preakness Stakes runner-up Sham, and Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Risen Star (by Secretariat). Former Heytesbury Stud stallion Is It True also shuttled from Walmac to Western Australia in the 1990s.

Walmac is currently home to champion sire SUCCESSFUL APPEAL, 2012’s leading sire of winners & two-year-old winners, SONGANDAPRAYER and promising first crop sire of 2012 READY’S IMAGE.

For those lucky enough to have booked a mare to HENNY HUGHES this year, he will complete his first book at Rangeview within the next fortnight and then he is off again, before we’ve hardly got to know him. He has covered over 80 mares at a $7,700 (inc gst) service fee.

We all hope he travels well and has a marvellous year at Walmac, and now, before he’s even left, we can’t wait to have him back in WA next July/August, healthy and happy.

When trainer Chris Stelmach went to the 2012 Magic Millions Sale a horse she was particularly interested in was Lot 7 a filly by SO SECRET from Outward Display. Chris always known as a “no nonsense talker” was training the half sister – Guessing Game by Key Business and was pleased with that 2 year old filly’s 2nd and 3rd placing from as many starts.

Chris had joined in the Magic Millions Vendors Parade day visiting studs in the Bullsbrook area on the Sunday week before the sale, and was particularly pleased with the SO SECRET filly from Outward Display. (We think she also really loved the fruit slushies and nibbles put on by Robbie and Jody). But getting back to the story, the filly looked the part, Chris was particularly keen on her and the filly went home after the sales as part of the Stelmach stable.

This filly like all reports so far broke- in really well. The SO SECRET’s have all shown great temperament, kindness and a willingness to work and you cannot ask for a better start than that.

Now named SECRET DIVA she had a mini prep with her breaking and again the stable was impressed by what she did, and now the filly is in her first real testing preparation going through to trials.

At her first trial she ran third in 56.72(pretty good time) losing a lot of ground at the start but running on very strongly at the end and after the line, and today could have won by a lot more, according to Chris.
Now the real excitement starts and everyone hopes that SECRET DIVA who shows a lot of promise can get to a race start in this preparation, before the common “curse” of the babies “shin soreness” gets her. We all hope so!!

(Denise T.)

P.S. Another SO SECRET to get to trials in October- WISE TALK out of Real Hi did go shinsore in her first trial finishing 5th, and she went straight to the paddock to also be set for “bigger things” in the new year.

BARAKEY (by Key Business from Dance Hi).

It’s Super Saturday as marketed by Perth Racing. Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes 1200m and Group 1 Railway Stakes 1600m on the same card with other Listed and Group races. What a showcase day to be racing! It’s arrived the testing day for the local 10 out of 10 BARAKEY. Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes glory or other is waiting!

BARAKEY looked stunning —so fit, such definition to all those equine muscles, could he ever look better? You could not think so, based on the horse that part owner Aristos Mihalopoulos was nervously holding onto leading around the parade ring. Trainer Jim Taylor should have been proud, because the job that he has done in training BARAKEY was basically over. It was now up to the other part of this trio -jockey Jason Brown. The tension of having the favourite in any Group 1 race is immense, but when you are trying to keep an unbeaten winning streak intact, it’s even moreso.

The curve ball in drawing barrier 10 from 10 for a front runner, would they keep him out, how easy would Jason get across, would he try and lead? Will it be 11 straight wins? Gee –too much to think about!!!

The gates opened and WOW– BARAKEY was basically there just alongside frontrunning Travinator before the others could really blink and think. You were hoping he would steady and not overrace, but then Jason had to give him a little touch around the bend, and that was unexpected, and caused a bit of anxiety.

Around the bend and they straightened, Travinator still appeared to be going ok, nothing else had yet really burst forth, and then BARAKEY and Jason said -lets go racing- do what we do so well! The gutsy horse looked up the straight and said they won’t get me, and into the strong headwind he ran his heart out. Official margin half a length. But don’t be put off by that.

Did you know that Barakey and Travinator ran their first 600m in 34.37 from a standing start! And then BARAKEY ran the last 600m in 35.23. The rest of the field could not keep up with them early on, and only BARAKEY has run the hard 1200m –no other horse did. If ever opposition had a chance to run him down especially having done all the work and with the headwind, yesterday was their chance. And while Power Princess was meritorious in running second, BARAKEY just outclassed and outgutsed the Group 1 field.

So many congratulations to Jim Taylor for his patience and discipline in training and programming BARAKEY these past years in his 11 straight wins, and for his first Group 1 winner as a trainer. Jason Brown for his understanding of the horse and trust in Jim. For part owner Aristos who gets to see Barakey and work with him nearly everyday the feeling and elation and pride must be immeasurable and also for Terry Zeppos. Fantastic for all concerned with the horse.

Congratulations to stallion KEY BUSINESS for his first Group 1 success.
We’re not going to think about BARAKEY’S his next start, just let’s really enjoy this magnificent occasion.

What a whirlwind month has November 2012 been for anyone connected with Rangeview Stud! Early in the month we had the 6am start watching Sky racing from the Breeders Cup meeting in California when 2 year old filly BEHOLDER by HENNY HUGHES became his first Group 1 winner in USA. It was such excitement knowing that stallion Henny Hughes was sitting in our backyard calm, happy, now a Group 1 sire from the most prestigious race meeting in USA, and owned by Rangeview Stud. Such a young sire (only 9 years old) with 135 winners -11 stakes winners and 17 stakes placegetters, a fantastic 58% winners to runners percentage, and already two Stakes placed fillies in Australia – surreal.

Then Melbourne Cup day and the KEY BUSINESS sired BARAKEY was stepping out in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes. Would he make it 10 from 10? Well, YES he did. He bolted in, easing down and just outside the record! Wow what pressure for the next start?

So another Saturday arrives November 24, marketed by Perth Racing as Super Saturday- and it was. Just “super” for BARAKEY- to try and make it 11 from 11 in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes over 1200m with the quality Eastern States invaders, and the outside barrier draw that everyone calls the “visitors draw”!!

BARAKEY did WIN as you have read above, it was exciting, relieving, uplifting and that same great feeling mentioned above, knowing that stallion KEY BUSINESS was sitting in our backyard calm, happy, now a Group 1 sire from one of the most prestigious race meetings in Perth, and owned by Rangeview Stud-surreal.

Now he is not a young sire like Henny Hughes but the master in charge at age 22. KEY BUSINESS was 16 years of age when he sired BARAKEY and the performances of this horse show you forget these “older masters” at your peril. His record is 205 winners to date with 13 Stakes winners of 19 stakes races plus an additional 5 stakes placed progeny. Our recent photos show, and anyone who sees Key Business will tell you that he absolutely does not look his age and is in really great health- which in part is his own good genetics, but it is also the care and handling of him by Robbie and Jody and the workers at the stud.

Just as a footnote to the great stallion story, is that as an older stallion, KEY BUSINESS now has broodmares producing the goods. KEY BUSINESS had a “double” on super Saturday November 24, he was the broodmare sire of the winner of the Peroni Italy Sprint -Akhedasset from Business Asset by Key Business. A whole new career for Key Business and us to watch in the future.
